Moving Checklist!
Ultimate Moving Checklist for Edmonton & St. Albert Homeowners
Moving to a new home in St. Albert or the greater Edmonton area is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. As your local mortgage broker at DLC Mortgage Mentors, I’ve put together a practical moving checklist to keep you organized from start to finish.
8–6 Weeks Before Moving
- Decide on your moving plan: hire professional movers or rent a truck and recruit friends and family.
- Set a moving budget that includes movers, supplies, cleaning, and any overlap in rent or mortgage payments.
- Start decluttering every room so you’re only paying to move what you actually want to keep.
- Talk to your mortgage broker about your move, especially if you’re porting your mortgage, breaking a term, or buying and selling at the same time.
4–6 Weeks Before Moving
- Gather packing supplies: boxes, packing tape, labels, markers, and bubble wrap.
- Start packing non-essentials like seasonal clothing, décor, and books, and clearly label boxes by room and contents.
- Arrange school transfers for children and request records from doctors, dentists, and other professionals.
- Confirm your home insurance details for the new property and make sure coverage starts on possession day.
2–3 Weeks Before Moving
- Set up mail forwarding and start updating your address with your employer, bank, credit cards, insurance companies, and subscriptions.
- Schedule utility disconnection at your current home and connection at your new home (power, gas, water, internet, cable).
- Confirm dates and details with your movers or truck rental company, including arrival time and access instructions.
- If you’re selling your existing home, confirm with your lawyer and mortgage broker that all closing documents are on track.
1 Week Before Moving
- Finish packing most rooms, leaving out only what you’ll need in the final days.
- Defrost and clean your freezer, empty and clean major appliances, and disconnect any hardwired electronics if needed.
- Pack an “essentials box” with toiletries, medications, a couple of changes of clothes, basic kitchen items, and important documents (ID, mortgage paperwork, lawyer’s contact info, moving contracts).
- Arrange care for kids and pets on moving day if that will make things easier.
Moving Day
- Do a final walkthrough of your old home: check closets, cupboards, storage areas, and the garage.
- Take meter readings and photos of the home’s condition for your records.
- Meet the movers, walk them through the home, and clearly indicate fragile items and priority rooms at the new place.
- Keep keys, phones, chargers, and your essentials box with you rather than in the moving truck.
First Week in Your New Home
- Unpack the essentials first: beds, bathroom items, and basic kitchen supplies.
- Test all utilities (heat, power, water, internet) and report any issues right away.
- Walk through the property to note any concerns and, if you’re the buyer, keep them documented with photos.
- Introduce yourself to neighbours and locate nearby services like grocery stores, pharmacies, and schools.
After You’re Settled
- Update your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and health care information with your new address.
- Make sure your address is updated on your property tax account and with any relevant government agencies.
- Review your mortgage and overall plan now that you’re in the new home—this is a good time to ask about options for prepayments, lump sums, or setting up a strategy for your next renewal.
- Store your closing documents, moving receipts, and warranties together in a safe, easy-to-find place.
